As India’s official ‘Pink City’, the capital of Rajasthan has more than just pink and red buildings and historic splendor. The majestic mansions of former kings exude old-world charm, surrounded by colorful markets and cluttered streets. As part of the ‘Golden Triangle’, Jaipur is a must-see along with Agra and New Delhi.

About six hours from New Delhi, Jaipur offers an escape from high-rise shopping malls and city life with magnificent palaces and havelis surrounded by massive forts. Take your time to see the works of the potter, such as the blue pottery. Keep an eye out for camels roaming Jaipur’s busy streets as you cycle past market stalls and rickshaws against a backdrop of colorful terracotta buildings. Stop for a cultural show at Chowki Dhani before heading to Jantar Mantar, Amer Fort, the Palace of Winds overlooking Johari Bazaar, and the world’s largest sundial at Hawa Mahal. If you’re lucky enough to leave Jaipur on Holi (March), you can see the ornately decorated elephants at the Elephant Polo. His October in Jaipur, on the other hand, has its own delights, including the Donkey Festival and the ‘Most Beautiful Donkey’ prize, as well as donkey racing and trading.
